Weekend Wrap Up - MLK Day in Julian, CA
My friends and I started a tradition ten years ago....have a fun day on MLK Day! Our very first MLK Day was in Hollywood (we were all living in San Diego at the time). We took a limo tour and saw celebrity houses and got into all kinds of shenanigans.
Over the years MLK Day hasn't always been a big trip or a big spectacular outing but we manage to do something every year. It might be a few hours for lunch or it can be revisiting Hollywood with my BFF's little in tow.
This year we decided on going to Julian, CA. I lived in San Diego for ten years and had never been. This little town (and I mean little) is about an hour east of San Diego in the Cuyamaca mountains off of a long winding road....yes, I got a little car sick. With all the rain SoCal has recently seen, the lake had some water. I'm told it was worse, but it hasn't filled back up to what it used to be.
When we got to Julian, the air was crisp. The cool, fresh air was most certainly welcomed after my stomach did somersaults on the way in. Once we parked and walked into the main area we decided to start checking things out.
Julian is known for pies....apple pies. I'm not a pie fan....at all...but I've heard good things. There was a place called Mom's that had a long line to wait for fresh apple pie. The "strip" is probably about a quarter of a mile of shops and restaurants. Later we found out there is wine tasting. Since we had a seven-year-old with us, we knew it wouldn't be a good idea. It also wouldn't be wise for someone that gets car sick to drink. From the outside, the shops had vintage storefronts, but on the inside there were not awesome vintage finds. Mountain life items were being sold. Lots of outdoorsy type stuff with woodland creatures, wood, flowers and fresh jams and hot sauces.
After walking around for a few, we decided we were getting hungry. Just as the rumblies of our tumblies started, we happened to walk in front of a soda shop, Miners Diner.
This was a pretty darn cute 50's themed restaurant! When we walked in and put our names in, we were told the wait was a half hour. We were happy that the restaurant had a bathroom....with a line that was longer than expected - womp, womp. We joked that by the time we got to the the front of the line, our name would be called. Unfortunately, we were not incorrect.

*Sidenote - I swear I took so many pictures....but they have disappeared somehow*
The restaurant had an awesome soda fountain and milkshake machine. The sign said they had ice cream....but we didn't go to the other side of the shop, which I think is where the ice cream was located.
The food was fantastic. I mean, I wanted to eat healthy, but those damn cheeseburgers that were coming out of the kitchen looked amazing....I caved, le sigh.
The hostess and waitresses were all amazing....except for ours. I mean really.... you can't even come to our table when we sit down to ask what we want to drink? Sheesh. We didn't get asked what we wanted to drink until we had been sitting at our table for ten minutes....at least that's when we started timing her. We only saw her twice the hour that we were there. Thankfully, the rest of the staff took care of us. Vent over :)
We wrapped up our day by checking out the stores and (of course) checking out the local candy shop.
We only spent a few hours in Julian, but it was a cute and quaint little town that is a nice change of pace from major metropolitan cities. We were all tuckered out and ready to go....but not before taking a selfie <3
