A Little Birdie Told Me....

I had a friend who wanted to do a themed Dirty 30 Birthday. I had about a month to find an outfit for a 40's / 50's night out!

As previously mentioned in earlier posts...the interest was there...but where to shop? Where to begin? Do I hit the streets? Do I go online??  Where or where does one look for the clothing?!

At the time Pinterest has just launched about a year earlier. So of course I do a search to see what kind of results I get. Who knew I'd get back all kinds of results!!

But this one...this one just pulled me in:

Birdie Dress by Pinup Girl Clothing

Ladies and Gents, meet Birdie! She's beautiful and it was love at first sight. As soon as I saw her, I decided...she must be mine....oh yes, she must be mine! And then, alas, I looked at the price. Ouch. My heart sank a little. Back to the drawing board. I search, I scoured and I hunted far and wide (well, where I thought I could find something) and came up disappointed. Even the other options that came up on Pinterest weren't doing it for me.

I work across the street from a mall, dangerous - I know, and decided to take a look around. Store after store, of course there is nothing. Then just for fun, I decided to poke around in Macy's. I absolutely love shoes, so of course, that is the department I end up in. That was my second magic moment. I fell in love a second time:

Luckkie by Madden Girl

I saw these lovelies designed by Steve Madden. This is apart of his "wallet-friendly" line Madden Girl. I decided this justifies buying the dress...right...RIGHT? I had a little stash of money and decided, you only turn 30 once! I have to look great for my friend's party! I purchased the Luckkie shoes and hurried back from lunch to order the dress. But alas, I was still hesitant to part with so much money for a dress.

I went home, thought about it and thought about it. Then decided to do it! It's a beautiful black dress that can be worn on multiple occasions. It will most certainly pay for itself! I hurried through the order in fear that I would change my mind again. I hit purchase and was satisfied with my order.

The next morning I was pleasantly surprised to receive my beautiful new Birdie!! That was so fast!! Little did I know (because of lack of research) that orders placed before 10AM Pacific Standard Time "should" ship the same business day. I work in Los Angeles and PUG ships from Burbank, which is just a few cities over...I win!

I couldn't wait to go home and try on my new purchase. I was so disappointed when it was on. Everything was beautiful and spectacular - except for me! I'm not putting myself down nor am I body shaming. I am just a petite person. I ordered a medium and everything fit except for the under arms, they sagged a good 6 inches. Nothing a seamstress couldn't fix. Just slightly bummed that I needed to fork out some more dough. I should have guessed, PUG or not, most of my dresses need alterations.

However, in the end, it was all worth it! I loved the 1950's vibe of the sateen shimmer. The wide notched collar with a cross-over bust line really gives it that vintage flair. It comes with a wide vinyl belt which sits beautifully above the full circle skirt to accentuate my figure.

I wore this dress like it was my birthday! I have since worn it on many occasions. I wanted to do a little photo shoot of how I would wear it now. This was my first vintage reproduction dress and I had yet to delve into the hair and make-up. Unfortunately, my beautiful Birdie is getting a bath at the dry cleaners, so that will be a future post. The pictures below are from my friend's birthday at an awesome speakeasy type bar in Downtown Los Angeles called The Association - complete with a lion faced knocker. You'd never know it was there...unless you know.

Of course as I rummage through the hundreds of pictures taken that night, NONE are full length. As you can see, everyone did an amazing job finding lavish garments to wear that evening - like Stop Staring and Bettie Page (now Tatyana). Like I said, I've worn this dress many times over...but I've learned to be careful. The deep neck line of this dress (and my bust) are most certainly not  suitable for all occasions, but always gets rave reviews when adorned in it. Hindsight - totally worth the price tag. I've owned my Birdie for three years now and I don't see myself retiring it any time soon. I was right! It paid for itself.

Sorry this was so long, but this was my first baby, my first PUG. Until next time!

Essentially,

Evie
